Robot & Frank – DVD review

Reflections on the indignities of ageing elevate this caper about an unlikely criminal alliance

Jake Schreier, 2012

How do you make a grumpy old man even grumpier? Answer: move a meddlesome domestic android into his rural retreat. It sounds like the stuff of third-rate Disney but a loveably gruff Frank Langella brings out the best in Christopher Ford’s script – “It is a pleasure to meet you.” “How would you know?”

The plot turns heist caper as the pair form an unlikely criminal alliance – fittingly enough to pinch a vintage copy of Don Quixote – but peppered through the script are reflections on the indignities of ageing. What could an old cat burglar and an appliance have in common? Built-in obsolescence.
