Rory Simpson, former boss of executive education at London Business School, has been appointed Chief Executive Learning Officer at Telefónica, the Spanish telecommunications company, and director of Universitas Telefónica, the company’s corporate university, headquartered near Barcelona. The position of CLO is a new one for the Spanish company.

Mr Simpson, who before joining LBS worked in the executive development offices in both Iese Business School in Barcelona and Thunderbird, is one of the most widely-known people in the executive education field. In particular, he was a key European player in Unicon, the executive education industry body.

Mr Simpson says that Telefónica has already made a considerable commitment towards educating its staff. “Its impressive corporate university project is a testament to this. It truly believes in learning as a driver for change and I look forwards to the opportunity to leading that endeavour”.

Since its inauguration in 2007, Telefónica’s corporate university has delivered 36 programmes to 5,500 Telefónica executives in English and Spanish. Learning on the campus is enhanced by a virtual campus. According to the company, Universitas Telefónica will augment its facilities this month when the new regional headquarters of Telefónica in Catalonia opens in Barcelona.
