The ill wind that carried Nick Cave’s malevolent first band The Birthday Party out of Melbourne in 1979 blows again, this time bringing us New War from the same city – a quartet whose fine debut album is a claustrophobic exercise in post-punk atmospherics, all Birthday Party-style intensity, PiL-echoing basslines, morbid imagery and distressed synths.
