The number of commercial payment cards used by small businesses in the UK almost doubled to 2.2m between 2002 and 2006, according to research commissioned by MasterCard Global Commercial Products.

The aggregate value of transactions involving small business cards increased even faster from £6.2m in 2002 to £12.8m last year.

The most popular uses of commercial payment cards by small businesses is to pay for fuel and car servicing, building supplies and retail or wholesale purchases.
