Extremely advanced for his time

From Ms Natasha Fletcher.

Sir, With reference to Gary Silverman’s Notebook column outlining the egregious comments of Donald Sterling (May 2), I take but one issue: the comparison made between Neanderthals and those of perhaps a less shrewd disposition. Evidence suggests that Neanderthals were extremely advanced for their time, and the association with inferior intelligence is unfounded.

In any case, the Neanderthals likely experienced the luxury of an absence of language and so would have been unable to broadcast any bigoted views, coded or otherwise – perhaps in this respect, an alignment with the Neanderthals would in fact be a good thing.
