Gavin Williamson's dramatic sacking as the UK defence secretary has shocked Westminster. Mr Williamson, whose been at the Ministry of Defence since 2017, was booted out of his job on Wednesday evening following a leak inquiry into the National Security Council.
This is the first person to leave the cabinet in a generation following a leak inquiry. Last week the senior government ministers, intelligence, and military officials met to make a decision on Huawei and whether it should be involved in the construction of the UK's 5G network.
This is a top-level body where secrecy is paramount, yet that Huawei decision made its way onto the front pages of national newspapers. Theresa May, the prime minister, confronted Mr Williamson yesterday evening and said there was credible evidence he was to blame, notably an 11-minute phone call between the defence secretary and the journalist in question.
But Mr Williamson says that the conversation with that journalist was about other matters. And he continues to insist there should be a criminal inquiry as he believes that he would be cleared of all the accusations.
So where does this leave Theresa May and her government? It has been an increasingly fragile and unstable administration with the government unable to pass any legislation on Brexit or domestic policy matters.
A result of this has been that leaking has become a key part of her government. Every week, what goes on in the cabinet room has been leaked to journalists like myself.
But the fact is that the NSC is a different level. It's the top security body of the government. And leaking from that was a step too far, so Theresa May may find it within herself to take this decisive action.
