Oswald Grübel began his banking career in 1961 at Deutsche Bank as an apprentice and in 1970, moved to White Weld Securities as a trader. He moved up the ladder at the eurobond specialist to become its chief executive from 1978-1985, after Credit Suisse took over the company. He then spent the next 22 years at the Swiss banking group.
