(In & Out Records)

Veteran saxophonist Odean Pope rubbed shoulders with the likes of John Coltrane and Jimmy Smith in vibrant 50s Philadelphia, and was a long-term sideman with drummer Max Roach – referenced by the zesty rhythms of “To the Roach”.

Pope’s tone, thrust and sparkle are intact and a five-piece horn section showcases the mature technically demanding originals – the one standard is an eloquent ballad duet with bassist Lee Smith.

Saxophonists James Carter and Walter Blanding add lustre to the classy arrangements and Jeff Watts powers a top rhythm section.
