Kate Bostock, general merchandise head at M&S, Anthony Thompson, Fat Face chief, and Barbara Horspool, New Look’s design director, were among the fashion retail executives gathered at the Drapers Awards midweek.

A more surprising guest was Liam Gallagher of Oasis fame, whose Pretty Green label scooped the best men’s wear gong.

John Lewis also walked away with a clutch of awards, including department store of the year and best large e-tailer.

Managing director Andy Street noted another feather in the retailer’s cap. The theme tune to its Christmas ad, Ellie Goulding’s version of Elton John’s “Your Song”, was at No1 in the iTunes download chart, or “what in my day used to be called the hit parade”.
