Experimental feature

Lips are wetted in anticipation of a joint album by the makers of two of last year’s best rap albums, ex-Company Flow mainman El-P (Cancer 4 Cure) and Atlanta’s Killer Mike (RAP Music).

Even better, Run the Jewels is available as a free download, an underground riposte to Watch the Throne’s gold-plated luxury.

The results live up to expectations, El-P’s dense artillery of beats seizing the listener by the lapels as he and Mike swap rhymes, their voices a contrast between the former’s aggressive New York attack and the latter’s intense southern drawl.

The pair have form together (El-P produced RAP Music; Mike guested on Cancer 4 Cure); this album takes their fruitful partnership to another level.
