A day after the US launched a surprise air strike on a base in Syria, Steven Mnuchin, Donald Trump’s treasury secretary, said that additional sanctions against the Middle Eastern country are on the way.

Mr Mnuchin told reporters that additional sanctions against Syria are forthcoming, without providing further details, according to a pool report from the Friday briefing.

The military strikes, which were launched in response to a chemical weapons attack that killed more than 70 people, mark a shift of strategy for the White House over Syria and have also heightened tensions between the US and Russia, which backs the Syrian government led by president Bashar al-Assad.
