Mogwai’s new album features the modular synthesiser, a new innovation for the Scottish post-rockers, born from their soundtrack work for the French zombie television drama Les Revenants. But despite Rave Tapes’ title, the Scottish post-rockers haven’t exactly gone klaxon-crazy with their new discovery.
Instead the vintage electronics add an impressive quality of calm and space to the band’s brooding instrumentals, as with the John Carpenter-style computerised melody that rises up from the driving drums and guitars of “Remurdered” or the Krautrock-like cosmic tones of “Simon Ferocious”.
