Theresa May sacked her ambitious UK defence secretary Gavin Williamson after an inquiry into a leak from the National Security Council over Huawei’s involvement in the UK’s 5G network.
In a letter to Mr Williamson, the prime minister said he had failed to engage with the leak inquiry, which “provides compelling evidence suggesting your responsibility for the unauthorised disclosure”.
Mr Williamson hit back, swearing on the lives of his children that he was not responsible for the leak, saying he had been “screwed” by the prime minister in a “witch hunt” in a “kangaroo court”.
Opposition leaders have called for a criminal investigation into Mr Williamson’s conduct over a potential breach of the Official Secrets Act.
