From Mr William Keegan.
Sir, Ferdinand Mount’s Notebook (“Don’t give up on mutuals quite yet”, December 18) prompts me to suggest that after all the publicity rightly devoted to “bad bankers” a word of praise is surely in order for my old friend Jonathan Agnew, who fought successfully, when chairman of Nationwide, to resist pressure for demutualisation.
May I also share with you the story of the time I met Jonathan Agnew the cricket commentator, and told him that I was a friend of the other Jonathan Agnew? “Ah,” he replied with gusto. “The banker? I am a member of Nationwide, and have a letter from Jonathan Agnew to Jonathan Agnew framed on the wall.”
