John Quelch is to step down as dean of the China European International Business School (Ceibs) just two years after he took the role. Prof Quelch will leave on January 31, 2013, to be replaced as dean and vice-president of the school by Hellmut Schütte. Ceibs has campuses in Shanghai and Beijing and also runs degree programmes in Ghana.

Ceibs announced the departure and new appointment in a single sentence on its website. According to the statement, Prof Quelch “has successfully completed his tenure”. The announcement is in stark contrast to the high levels of publicity that Prof Quelch courted during his tenure at Ceibs and in his previous roles, as dean of London Business School and marketing guru at Harvard Business School.

Prof Schütte is an emeritus professor of international management at Insead, which he joined in 1981, and holds the European Chair for Global Governance and Sino-European Business Relations at Ceibs.

Prof Quelch will return to Harvard Business School.
