Experimental feature

The pioneering modern jazz drummer is in awe-inspiring form on this previously unreleased live recording that grabs you by the scruff of the neck right from the word go – “Lotus Blossom” opens at a fair old lick.

Unusually, Roach’s band had no piano, but Bobby Boswell’s rock-solid double bass, imaginative arrangements and close attention to dynamics amply compensated. The three-horn front line, including brothers Stanley and Tommy Turrentine on sax and trumpet, is as sensitive as it is fired up, and even “Tunisia” sounds fresh.
