Snapshot: ‘Other Postman’ (2007), by Chen Wei

The Chinese photographer presents his visions of an unsettling, soporific world through a series of highly choreographed images of installations

Photographer Chen Wei (born 1980), who lives and works in Beijing, is one of the new generation of Chinese artists whose work explores the place of the individual in a rapidly evolving China.

The photograph “Other Postman”, in which darkness encroaches on a solitary figure, is one of those on show in Slumber Song, Chen’s first solo exhibition in Britain (see slideshow below). It forms one of a series of highly choreographed and often unsettling images of installations, often composed of everyday objects and settings, which the artist sketches, composes and then photographs.

‘Chen Wei: Slumber Song’ is at Ben Brown Fine Arts, London, until June 5.
