The fresh and springy rhythms on this mainstream acoustic jazz set from Danish drummer Anders Mogensen belie the slightly world-weary album title.
Mogensen’s light cymbals and polyrhythmic flourishes knit tightly with Daniel Franck’s upright bass and pianist Carl Winther has a strong voice and a firm touch. But it’s the unmistakable sound of tenor saxophonist Gary Thomas that lifts the album out of the routine. The American hasn’t recorded much of late, and his tense phrasing, sharp intellect and dry, slightly sour tone are transformative.
