From Mr Thomas W Streeter.

Sir, Talking about the American Declaration of Independence, Annette Gordon-Reed says: “That document, which insists that all men are equal and entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness . . .” (“America has yet to overcome its tortured racial past”, August 18).

What the Declaration actually says is that “all men are created equal” (my emphasis), which is an entirely different idea.

Her article is carefully organised and stated, but it is profoundly discouraging to have a professor at the Harvard Law School make such a common mistake.
