Is Terrence Malick losing the plot? To the Wonder is a wafer-thin meditation on love and God that’s almost devoid of story and which propels Malick’s experimentalism to new heights of semi-abstract drifty-dreariness. Ben Affleck scowls and sulks, his lover Olga Kurylenko drifts, pouts and prances, a priest, Javier Bardem, frowns and chunters. It’s nicely filmed, but with its fractured editing, it’s often hard to fathom what’s going on. It’s even harder to care.
