This week Robert Shrimsley has been thinking purely in pictures for his column, The National Conversation. He collaborated with his regular illustrator Lucas Varela on a comic strip – to describe the royal birth in words and pictures.

Lucas Varela was born in 1971 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and studied graphic design at the University of Buenos Aires. After working in newspapers as an infographist he became an illustrator and cartoonist. His comic book Paolo Pinocchio was included in the official selection of the Angoulême International Comics Festival 2013. Among his other works are The Colonel’s Heritage and Matabicho. He is based in France where he is working on his next graphic novel, The Longest Day in History.
