When musicians of the stature of bassist Tom Kennedy “just play” they make a put-together day in the studio sound like a well-honed project. Kennedy, best known for playing ferocious fusion bass guitar, here switches to double bass on a set of nicely tweaked standards, fronted by the warm-toned saxophonist George Garzone.
Long-term crony Dave Weckl is on drums, Renee Rosnes on piano and guests include trumpeter Tom Hagans and guitarist Mike Stern. Kennedy, playing beautifully, is solid in support and thoughtful and fluent when centre stage.
