Staged at Glyndebourne in 2012, this pairing of Ravel’s two exquisite one-acters comes across on DVD even better than it did in the theatre.

The predominantly francophone cast can be admired in close-up – the camerawork is superb – and the jewel-like fragrance of the music, alternately insouciant and innocent, is wonderfully served by Ono and the orchestra. Pelly’s colourful staging combines wit, subtlety, brilliant design and high entertainment – a theatrical tour de force that gives full rein to Ravel’s fantasy.
