Sir, It is ironic that, in the same week, you report, first, that President Xi Jinping of China will address “the mother of parliaments” next week (“ Golden era of ping pong diplomacy as London prepares way for President Xi”, October 13) and that the exhibition of Magna Carta has been banned from a university in Beijing (“ Magna Carta non grata as Beijing blocks exhibition”, October 15).

As London gets ready to receive the president, British ministers have pressed their Chinese counterparts to hail “a golden era” in Sino-British relations. Having served two tours of duty in the British diplomatic mission in Beijing, I cringe with shame.
