Sir, I agree with the points raised by European business leaders ( Letters, February 17) about the dangers of Brexit. However, one aspect that I feel has been neglected in the debate so far is the view of small and medium-sized enterprises from across Europe, which is overwhelmingly in favour of remaining inside the EU.

We recently undertook research that showed the potentially devastating impact on trade if Britain were to leave the EU. One in three SMEs in Spain and one in five in The Netherlands said they would be less likely to, or altogether cease, trade with Britain if it were to leave Europe. Many of the concerns regarding a Brexit are also true of all UK business regardless of size, from regulatory issues, to immigration policy and questions of access. But their impact is often magnified when it comes to SMEs, who lack the scale and resource of major corporates to deal with them.

Just a week after one global bank gave Britain a boost of confidence by deciding not to move its headquarters abroad, the message from most SMEs seems clear: Britain inside the EU is a win for British people and a win for British business.
