Snapshot: ‘Old Industrial Area’ (2011-12) by Liang Weizhou

The photograph is part of ‘Post-Jiangnan’, an exhibition that captures scenes from the former rural provinces in and around Shanghai

Liang Weizhou, a 50-year-old artist based in Shanghai, worked as a teacher at an art college for 19 years, eventually becoming known for his expressionist and surrealist paintings.

In 1999, Liang took up photography, and the exhibition Post-Jiangnan chronicles his exploration of the medium. Photographs such as “Old Industrial Area – Gaozi County” (2011-12), shot on black-and-white film with coloured pigment later added to certain areas, capture the aftermath of industrialisation in the former rural provinces in and around Shanghai, an area known as the Jiangnan region.

‘Post-Jiangnan’ is showing until December 30 at M97 Gallery, 97 Moganshan Rd, Shanghai
