Martin Wolf writes, in “ The Faustian bargain of nationalism”, December 19), that “nationalism is a secular religion that sanctifies the idea of the nation”. I believe it’s fair to say that internationalism is similarly a secular religion, though one with fewer believers, who demographically tend toward elite status, and sadly often overestimate their followings and their influence in democracies.
