From Mr Leonard S. Hyman.

Sir, I always had the feeling that conservatives praised but did not read Hayek. After all, he categorised a typical conservative as having “paternalistic, nationalistic, and power-adoring tendencies ... anti-intellectual, and often mystical propensities” and as a “defender of established privilege ... ” He even wrote that people deserve “security against severe physical privation, the certainty of a given minimum of sustenance for all” and, get this, “the case for the state’s helping to organise a comprehensive system of social insurance is very strong”. That’s all from The Road to Serfdom. Now, after reading Steven Rattner (Comment, September 13), I’m not sure that the liberals read the book either. Hayek deserves better.
