In a city full of memorials only an obscure plaque is spared for Tyburn gallows where as many as 60,000 people were hanged, a dark stain on London’s history. A better memorial comes with this intriguing concept album by Marc Almond and John Harle.
Ex-Soft Cell frontman Almond channels his fascination for cabaret into theatrical songs about the city’s lore. Meanwhile composer Harle creates a moody score flickering with echoes of Gypsy folk, late-night jazz and, for “Spring Heeled Jack”, about the supernatural London villain, neurotic prog rock.
