Arve Henriksen’s celebration of religious buildings is steeped in spirituality, space and a gentle swirl of rhythm. Each track has a specific inspiration – most from his native Norway, but “Alhambra” and “Le Cimitière Marin” get a mention – and this is captured by field recordings and layers of synthesised and sampled sound.
But it is Henriksen’s fragile, breathy trumpet and occasional falsetto vocal which grab the attention, brilliantly conjuring the wraiths of abandoned cathedrals, the spirits of isolated churches and, on Alhambra, the ghost of Miles Davis.
