Casting directors have gone berserk in Hollywood. No extravagance is now spared to hire the famous. After American Hustle and August: Osage County – tanked to the brim with marquee names – comes Out of the Furnace, starring C. Bale, C. Affleck, W. Harrelson, W. Dafoe, F. Whitaker and Uncle Sam Shepard. Sadly someone forgot the script. That someone is Scott Cooper, filmmaker, contriving a dumb revenge plot about a Pittsburgh steelworker (Bale) going after the Appalachian super-goon (Harrelson) who may have kidnapped or killed Bale’s brother (Affleck). The film ends in guns, grandiloquence and gonzo justice. Before that, it spends 100 minutes setting the table for guns, grandiloquence and gonzo justice. Macho ado about nothing.
