The Japanese yen strengthened to a near-five-month high during early Asia trade on Wednesday amid rising geopolitical tensions in North Korea and Syria.

The yen strengthened 0.2 per cent to ¥109.43 against the dollar, its highest level since November 17.

The currency yesterday broke below ¥110 to the dollar for the first time since November.
