Sir, You want the UK to be “one of the two leading military powers in the EU, alongside France” ( editorial, February 7). Why? Both countries are much smaller than Germany and both are more or less broke — when will you next do a piece bemoaning our indebtedness?

Our recent military interventions have left large parts of the Middle East in hell. Yet you and others advocate more unwinnable interventions, to be financed who knows how. There is no voter will or mandate to intervene in the places that need our supposed help. That is why the David Cameron is silent on the subject, pre-election.

An aspiration for Britain to be a leading military power in Europe sounds as though it has fallen out of a history book of the 19th century. It is completely out of place in 2015.
