Aki Rissanen Trio: Aleatoric

The Finnish pianist’s trio comes without a bass in a mix of composition and improv, with focus on strong moods

There’s space and mood to spare in Finnish pianist Aki Rissanen’s mix of composition and improv – unrehearsed and recorded in a day, the title references the importance of chance.

Unusually, Rissanen’s trio comes without a bass, and the focus is on the strong moods and stark settings conjured by the leader, and his relationship with the sensitive and melodic lead of Belgian saxophonist Robin Verheyen.

Drummer Markku Ounaskari decorates with a supple pulse, there’s fire and calm, and on the title track, sombre beauty.
