Troyk-estra combine the angular lines and latticework rhythms of UK power-jazz trio Troyka with a thoughtfully arranged big band. Chris Montague’s grimy chords still crunch with menace over Joshua Blackmore’s paired-down beats and Kit Downes continues to conjure underworld revels from gritty keyboard sounds.
At their best, the crunchy riffs, amplified by brass, support a complex narrative of events, though elsewhere orthodoxy can soften the edges. Rousing sax and trumpet solos deliver good measure and “Elegant Her” is a standout feature for elegiac guitar.
