The French-born New Yorker’s rococo technique is something of a trademark, but on this live solo piano recording, it is held in check to serve the imperatives of thematic development.

Centrepieces are the thoughtful original improvisations of the sombre, blues-tinted title track and the six demanding “Etude Tableaux” (No 4 is viewable on video-enhanced CD).

Pilc’s imagination remains intact, bringing the introduction of “Caravan” vividly to life with deadened notes, shrouding “Blue in Green” in mist and delivering a playfully off-centre “Mack the Knife”.
