Sir, Malcolm Levitt’s observation on the Magna Carta and rights of foreign merchants in the UK is inspired (Letters, January 10).

We are a kind of “economic Wimbledon” where great international names set up shop on an equal footing and give livelihoods to local people. The fast growing automotive industry is an example.

The City of London is another example. The world class financial institutions that set up in London are all part and parcel of the glory of the City. And the multiplier effects in downstream services and even manufacturing is very considerable.

That is why I hope the government focuses on securing the City within Europe. And I hope our European partners come to realise that support for being in a great dynamic zone of trade, ideas and interchange and support for an open and dynamic City of London are two sides of the same coin and derive from the same instincts. I say that as a pro-European.
