Sir, Your report “Chief constable seeks change to force’s role” (August 15) refers to Sir Robert Peel and goes on to make the common error of writing of police “officers” and “civilians”.

Peel was insistent that his Peelers were civilians and such, happily, is still the case here – unlike the situation in less happy lands. It is why police chiefs have resisted the suggestion that the army should be brought in to tackle rioters.
