Strength and Power

(Rare Noise)

At times, the veteran free jazz trombonist’s gruff and grizzly tones hark back to early days playing Dixieland jazz.

But here the tailgate moans come with clean lines and the vocalised shouts blend seamlessly into the machinations of a through-improvising quartet. It makes for a great album of free-form jazz that is fully focused throughout.

Pianist Jamie Saft is sensuous and resonant, Trevor Dunn the linchpin double bass and drummer Balazs Pandi the dynamic driving force.

Highlight is the deftly deconstructed boogie “Struttin’ for Jah Jah”.
