Coronation Mass etc
Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum
The attraction of this CD lies partly in the combination of three of Mozart’s most sublime sacred works (Vesperae solonnes de Confessore and Ave verum corpus alongside the Coronation Mass) and partly in the innocent sound of the trebles of Tewkesbury Abbey, one of whom sings the soprano solos in the Mass.
Charivari Agréable, a lively period instrument ensemble, is another plus: there’s none of the overweening solemnity that often belabours this music. But it’s not enough. The performances lack “balls”: it’s as if Mozart’s music has become a by-product of English choral tradition.
