Donald Edwards opens this nicely varied set of originals with his beautifully constructed drum solo emerging from a field recording of a church congregation singing wordlessly at full tilt, and closes it with a hard-driving swinger.
In between, the band deliver self-penned ballads and slinky funk, tempo-changing romps and modal jazz with twisty themes delivered by Walter Smith III on sax and guitarist John Gilmore. Edwards plays throughout with a power, precision and drive that reflect his twelve years as the Mingus Organisation’s first choice drummer.
