NOVEMBER 9
Berlin Wall fall celebrated
A ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall is held in the German capital. Angela Merkel, chancellor, hosts, and guests include Nicolas Sarkozy, France’s president; Gordon Brown, UK prime minister; Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s president; and Hillary Clinton, US secretary of state.
EU discrimination survey
The European Commission is to publish in Brussels the results of its Eurobarometer survey on discrimination in Europe. The survey also covers three candidate countries: Croatia, Macedonia and Turkey.
Environment forum
The UK Environment Agency begins its two-day national conference in London, bringing together policymakers, scientists and business leaders. The event aims to provide practical advice on a range of issues, from climate change to water quality, waste, flood risk and factory emissions.
Advertising prizes awarded
The prize ceremony for the IPA Effectiveness Awards, for which entrants have to prove the effectiveness of their advertising and marketing strategies, is held in London.
Cambodian independence
The country marks its independence from France in 1953 with a national holiday.

EU finance ministers meet
European Union economics and finance ministers attend a meeting of the EU Economic and Financial Affairs Council in Brussels.
Darling at business awards
Alistair Darling, UK chancellor of the exchequer, is due to speak at the National Business Awards ceremony in London.
Energy outlook analysed
The International Energy Agency is to publish its World Energy Outlook, which gives analysis and projections on all forms of energy source.
Conference on capital
The two-day Corporate Finance World conference begins in Sydney, where the topics will include capital raising, refinancing and restructuring, risk and cost management.

NOVEMBER 11
Business continuity
The two-day BCM Conference and Exhibition opens in London, covering a range of business continuity, risk-management and security issues.
Aids research presented
The European Aids Conference begins in Cologne (until November 14), offering the latest research in HIV medicine.
Great War remembered
Armistice Day is held, commemorating the end of the first world war.

NOVEMBER 12
Japan welcomes Obama
Barack Obama, US president, arrives in Tokyo for a two-day visit to Japan, which will include talks with Yukio Hatoyama, the new prime minister.
Labour faces by-election
The Glasgow North East by-election takes place following the resignation of Michael Martin, Commons speaker, over MP expenses scandal. Labour held the seat in 2005 with a 10,000 majority over the Scottish National party.
Transnational crime forum
The International Summit on Transnational Crime opens in Paris (until November 13), bringing together governments, judicial administrations, international organisations and businesses to discuss combating economic crime and terrorism.
Future of food discussed
The Soil Association holds a conference in London on the future of food production in the face of climate change, water depletion, population expansion and reduced agricultural land.
Awards for women
The Women of the Future Awards are to be held in London, including categories for business, science, the professions and the arts.

NOVEMBER 13
Central European assembly
A summit of heads of government from the Central European Initiative grouping takes place in Bucharest. The body consists of 18 nations which seek political, economic and cultural co-operation.
Asset bubbles analysed
A two-day conference titled “Asset Price Bubbles and Monetary Policy” begins in Paris. Sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the Banque de France, the forum focuses on why asset prices can diverge from fundamental values and policymakers’ responses to such events.

NOVEMBER 14
Apec leaders assemble
Leaders of the 21 member states of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation grouping hold a two-day summit in Singapore, discussing a range of economic and trade issues. Barack Obama, US president, will also attend.
City welcomes Lord Mayor
The Lord Mayor’s Show takes place in the City of London to welcome new incumbent Nick Anstee.
World Cup soccer games
The first legs of the remaining qualifying play-offs for next year’s World Cup finals.
England face Pumas
Twickenham is the venue for England’s rugby union match against Argentina, while Scotland face Fiji in Edinburgh.

NOVEMBER 15
Obama visits China
Barack Obama begins a four-day visit to China, taking in Beijing and Shanghai. He will meet President Hu Jintao to discuss security, weapons non-proliferation, energy and climate change.
Internet issues debated
The Internet Governance Forum discusses regulatory and security issues over four days in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
Wallabies in Dublin
Ireland’s rugby union team plays the touring Australian side.
