Fashion forward in Singapore

Paige Parker, who chose to leave New York for Singapore with her family almost 15 years ago, is a patron of the arts, author and passionate supporter of local fashion talents. She is known for marrying pieces that accentuates elegance and relatability, observed in the homegrown collections she champions and her collaborations with local designers.

"

I think what is really exciting about Singapore fashion is the shift towards sustainability." says Paige. She points out that designers are moving towards sustainable fabrics, avoiding the pitfalls of over-producing, and working ethically to make sure garment workers are treated well.

One of the innovators Paige supports is Ee-ling Fock of The Missing Piece, whose designs usually have a clever missing piece, such as a chic cut-out. In response to the ongoing pandemic, Ee-ling started to make matching masks using leftover fabric. "It's a great way to reimagine her inventory by using otherwise forgotten material, reinforcing sustainability values." says Paige.

The pandemic has inspired many designers to adapt and try new things. Carolyn Kan of local jewellery brand Carrie K. has noticed a growing demand for upcycling: she has been busy reimagining inherited gems for clients to make them feel modern while still paying homage to the original heirloom. With many ideals in common, Carolyn and Paige have collaborated on a collection called Journey, a nod to Paige's book about her long-distance travel adventure with her husband.

So, is Singapore's fashion scene changing? "Singaporeans love to shop,” says Paige, “and I do think that they love their fashion on every level, but this is an innovative, adaptable and sustainable environment, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.”

Finding unique fashion brands has become a passion of mine, and I found there are incredible local designers right here in Singapore.
