Neneh Cherry follows her fine collaboration with avant-jazzers The Thing with her first solo album in 16 years, made with producer Kieran “Four Tet” Hebden.

A purple prose-laden paean to New York makes for a ropy start but things pick up when the beats come into focus – percussion subtly building in pitch, cowbells hinting at Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance” past, the singer sounding evergreen despite her worldly lyrics.
