It takes charm to make a song about a drug-addicted prostitute so radio-friendly that it spends three months in the top 10. That’s what Ed Sheeran has done with “The A Team”, and while the rest of his debut differs markedly in subject matter, chiefly consisting of love songs, it’s imbued with the same boyish charisma. The Suffolk 20-year-old blends lilting acoustic guitar with hints of R&B and rap, throwing in the odd sharp observation – to the girl he’s breaking up with: “You’re the only one who knows I lied” – to keep his tendency towards sentimentality in check.
