Italian authorities will on March 3 begin an inquest into the final voyage of the Costa Concordia, the cruise ship which foundered after hitting rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio in January.

Investigators hope the ship’s “black box”, which should contain data on timings of the ship’s movements along with recordings of conversations and orders given on the bridge, will shed light on important unanswered questions about the chronology of the disaster.

This interactive timeline is compiled from information that has already come to light, including statements given to prosecutors and the Italian senate, a coast guard log of the night’s events, and an unofficial video shot on the bridge of the Concordia on the night of the disaster. The maps shown in the timeline rely on Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, recorded from the AISLIVE network and supplied by Quality Positioning Services, a marine software company, and IHS Fairplay.
