Since being elected to the helm of the Catholic Church in March 2013, Pope Francis has launched a revolution within the Vatican in an attempt to reconnect the rigid institution to its 1.2bn followers, softening some of its tones on social issues, reforming its finances, and focusing more on the poor.

This month, the popular 78-year old Argentine pontiff is carrying those winds of change on a highly anticipated trip to Cuba and the US, where some of his views - especially on climate change, capitalism, and immigration - could rankle conservatives. It will be a more politically charged visit than is normally the case for a Pope, with speeches at the United Nations, and the US Congress - as well as a string of masses, including one in Havana’s Revolution Square.
