The year in review

There was an ominous fragility about the world in 2008. The foundations of capitalism were shaken to the point of collapse, prompting governments around the world to reassert their role. Terrorism wreaked havoc again and the events in the Caucasus, Zimbabwe and The Democratic Republic of Congo added to the pervading gloom.
