Financial Times Mobile Newsreader
What is the FT Mobile Newsreader?
Premium FT.com subscribers can read the news using our award-winning FT Mobile Newsreader. This downloadable application is designed to provide a quick and easy to use way to access FT.com content from your mobile phone, BlackBerry or other Java-compatible handheld device.
Who can download the FT Newsreader?
The FT Mobile Newsreader is a premium subscription service and content can only be viewed if you are an existing FT.com premium subscriber.
If you wish to subscribe to this service please view our subscription packages.
Is my mobile device compatible with the FT Newsreader?
The Newsreader should work on most mobile devices provided they support Java MIDP2 applications (see here for Sun' s list of compatible phones). Also, in order to download the latest headlines via the application, you need a network package which allows mobile internet connection.
Please view a list of confirmed devices which the application works on. Note that these are just a list of the most popular handsets used by our customers, and the application should work on many more devices.
Do I need to pay for the FT Newsreader?
In order to view the content within the Newsreader application you will need to pay for a premium subscription.
However, the Newsreader itself is free to download although you may have to pay data charges to your mobile network operator both to download it and to use it, depending on your contract. The reader itself is 70k in size, and uses somewhere around 5k of data each time the headlines are updated.
How do I download the FT Newsreader?
The newsreader application can be downloaded in 2 ways:
1. Via the following FT.com page:
Simply input your mobile telephone number into the fields provided and you will receive a text message to your handset. Clicking on the link will begin the application download.
2. Via text message
Text GO FTAPP to 85080 (if you have a UK-registered phone) or GO FTAPP to +44 7786 203 222 (if you have a non-UK registered phone) and you will receive a message back with a link. Click on the link to download the news reader to your device.
Please note you will receive not one, but two SMS messages. The reason for this is that one is a ‘WAP push' message which will automatically load the file, and the other is a standard SMS for phones which do not support WAP push. You will be able to download the application from either of the messages.
I cannot download the FT Newsreader to my handset?
This may be because your device is a corporate handset which goes through a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) which has been configured to block applications of this type. If this is the case then please check with your IT staff or BES administrator whether they allow the use of Java applications on company mobiles. In certain cases, company policy blocks access to staff downloading Java applications.
Check that your phone is in our list of supported phones, or supports Java MIDP2.
If it does, then try downloading directly by visiting the following case-sensitive URL on your phone' s internet browser:
http://leiki.magenta.net/ft2/mobile/ftapp.jad
Please also check whether you can normally access the internet on your handset (Not just email but the internet via a browser). If the answer is no, then you will need to contact your network provider to configure access to the data services.
Where do I find the News Reader on my phone once I' ve downloaded it?
This will depend on the model of your phone. For example:
On Nokia phones it will often be stored in the ‘My Own' or ‘Applications' folder on the main menu.
On Sony Ericsson phones it may be put into the ‘Applications' folder on your phone
On Orange, T-Mobile, O2, Qtec, Imate or other Windows Mobile -powered phones, it may be stored within ‘Java' on the main menu.
On BlackBerry phones, the application will appear at the bottom of the main menu, or under ‘Applications' . You can move it onto the main screen by pressing the ‘alt' key and clicking on the application. The application can then be moved where you want it. Press ‘alt' again to save it in the new position.
If in doubt, please consult the user manual for your device, or call your mobile operator for details.
How do I delete the application from my handset?
This varies depending on the device. Consult your user manual to see how to uninstall Java applications on your phone.
How do I login to the application / I cannot login to the application?
Once you have gone through the initial setup of the application you will be prompted to enter your username and password.
As for FT.com, your login credentials for the FT Newsreader are CASE SENSITIVE. Many devices will automatically capitalise the first letter you type in both the username and password fields. Please ensure that this is not the case when you are typing in your details. Also, ensure that the predictive text feature is disabled.
Please note that once you have logged into the Newsreader application once, your handset should remember you and you should not have to enter your username and password details again.
The application loads but I don' t see any stories. I get the error: 'Could not connect to the server. This is probably due to missing or invalid network access point settings. Refer to your device's manual and to your network provider.'
You may get this error if you have never successfully connected to receive stories from the application. The most likely cause is that the internet access point for Java applications hasn' t been correctly selected or configured. Please note that just because you are able to use the internet on your phone, this does not mean that you can use the application.
Please try restarting the application and selecting a different access point for using the application; for example, if you used the WAP setting, try using the GPRS or Internet setting (which should normally be the correct one). There are a also small amount of networks that do not provide suitable access points to some of their accounts. Your network provider will be able to confirm if this is the case.
The application loads but I don' t see any stories. I get a ‘server connection error' ?
This error usually happens if you have previously been able to access the application, but for some reason cannot access the network. This is normally if there is some problem with network coverage. Ensure you are in an area with signal and try again. If the problem persists, ensure that the GPRS or Internet gateway has been selected as the access point for the application to access the network. If this does not work, please uninstall the application and reinstall to try again.

I cannot access the FT Mobile website on my mobile device?
This may be because your handset is not WAP enabled, or because the settings on the phone have not been configured properly. If you do not know whether your handset is WAP enabled, please refer to your device manual or check with your mobile service provider.
This could also be a problem with network coverage. Ensure you are in an area with signal and try again. If you cannot then you may need to contact your network provider.
