The US Senate on Thursday night approved new rules for the interrogation of suspected terrorists and for military tribunals, handing a victory to the White House in the face of charges that the proposals were “un-American” and threatened the country’s moral authority.
The 65-34 vote means the bill could reach the president’s desk by week’s end. The House passed nearly identical legislation on Wednesday and was expected to approve the Senate bill on Friday, sending it on to the White House.
